Ricardo Energy & Environment has an exciting opportunity for a Graduate Consultant to join our Waste Technical Services Team. Reporting through our Resource Efficiency & Waste Management Practice, within our Infrastructure & Utilities Division, our team supports a broad range of public and private sector clients. These include investors, developers (including procuring local authorities) and operators of waste management services and recycling and waste to energy infrastructure across all stages of the project lifecycle.

Based in the UK, Ricardo Energy & Environment operates globally. Our Waste Technical Services Team is growing quickly, in the UK and overseas, building on our strong reputation. The team comprises specialists in waste operations and procurement, and due diligence and expert witness services. As a Graduate Consultant, this provides opportunities to work on projects ranging from recycling and waste collection service modelling and options appraisals to technical due diligence of advanced thermal treatment processes.

This role will provide the perfect first step into your consultancy career for a self-motivated individual, in an exciting and rapidly changing sector.


Key Accountabilities

From day one, you will be part of a team supporting our senior consultants in delivering projects to our clients. Successful applicants will have a strong degree in an environmental or engineering discipline and will be able to apply their knowledge of the environmental and waste sector, as well as their numeracy, communication and analytical skills to projects. Successful applicants will have a proactive, organised approach and a pride in the quality of their work.

Over time you will be expected to develop a strong understanding of the waste sector, including strategic, technical, commercial and regulatory aspects, and you will be able to contribute to a range of work and develop a career path with a focus on areas of particular interest and aptitude.

As a Graduate Consultant, you will contribute to the research and analysis that underpins our consultancy work. You will manage your time across several projects, contributing in all phases, from supporting the preparation of proposals to winning new contracts, through researching and analysing information and data, to contributing to client reports.

You will be responsible for the quality and delivery of your work and will liaise with other consultants to incorporate your contribution into wider project outputs. Whilst most of your work will be focused in the Waste Technical Services team, you will also have opportunities to work with and for other parts of the company, providing you with the chance to further expand your experience.


Key Competencies and Experience

The position would suit:

  • undergraduate or graduate applicants with a Bachelors degree (2.1 or above) in a relevant environmental or engineering discipline and preferably a Masters degree;
  • a high level of numeracy
  • an interest in the resources and waste management, environmental and renewable energy sectors;
  • excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate and interact with colleagues in the practice and clients

Skills and behaviours:

  • a high level of computer literacy, including familiarity with the full Microsoft Office software suite;
  • spreadsheet and data management and interpretation skills;
  • some knowledge of the waste and waste to energy sector and familiarity with some aspects of waste treatment and recycling and recovery technologies;
  • strong written and verbal communication skills in English;
  • be able to work outside the UK for short periods;
  • be flexible, resilient and enthusiastic; and
  • be able to work independently and demonstrate initiative, as well as operate effectively as part of a team.
